2022 "Sajana" Red Wine

“An interesting blend of 62% Merlot, 30% Syrah, and the rest a mix of varieties, the 2021 Sajana reveals a ruby hue as well as a terrific perfume of sweet red and black fruits that give way to more peppery herbs, flowers, and spicy nuances with time in the glass. This medium-bodied, plump, meaty, impressively balanced 2021 has the vintage's pure, seamless style, nicely integrated oak and tannins, and outstanding length. Secondary flavors of mocha, wild berries and currant come wrapped in a package of polished tannins. The challenging growing conditions in ‘20 nevertheless provided PV365 with a textbook version of this noble Bordeaux variety. In the glass, the wine starts out with aromas of dark chocolate, ripe blueberries, and a hint of spice. The palate is a rich, complex mouthful of black currant, tobacco, and dried cherries. The lush, ample fruit harvested in 2018 has translated to an approachable, but still very powerful, Cabernet Franc. Aromatic notes of blue and red fruit, violets, and black tea mingle in the glass, along with a touch of caramel from barrel aging. “The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is almost all Cabernet Sauvignon yet includes 3% Petit Verdot, 1% Malbec, and a tiny splash of Cabernet Franc, all of which spent 22 months in 60% new French oak. It has a classic varietal nose of bright blue fruits as well as ample minty herb, floral, tobacco, and cedary wood notes. These all carry to a medium-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon with a ripe, round mouthfeel, fine tannins, and outstanding length. Something special seems to happen with the Moulds’ fruit grown on the western benchlands of the Oak Knoll District. Their uniquely situated property is one of Napa Valley’s most ideal spots to grow super-concentrated, but balanced, Cabernet Sauvignon. The challenging but ultimately successful 2020 growing conditions allowed PV365 to bottle such a wine. The Cabernet’s aromas are a complex array of currants and spice, with intriguing, velvet-smooth butterscotch and mocha notes adding even more complexity on the nose. On the palate, a balanced combination of red and black fruits, bright, high-toned acidity, and a long finish framed by smooth, integrated tannins make for a wonderfully expressive and full-bodied Napa Cabernet—a wine built for aging, but good luck trying to wait!

The best Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons offer consistent flavors and aromas, but depending on where they grow in the Valley, vines can work in different ways. With our 2018 Cabernet, crafted from the exquisite J Squared Vineyard in the Coombsville AVA of southeast Napa, fruit tends to ripen late in the growing season. This additional hangtime gives rich flavors of cherries and plums, bright acidity, and fully developed tannins. Our resulting ’18 is approachable at this early stage of its life, but the wine’s firm structure suggests years of cellar potential.

“Surya is a Cabernet Franc-dominated release that includes 2% Merlot and roughly 1% each of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec. Coming all from the Stagecoach Vineyard and aged 22 months in 50% new French oak, it has a more open, spicy, expressive style in its red fruits, cedary herbs, savory flowers, and smoked tobacco, with a kiss of background oak. It's a much more floral, perfumed, finesse-driven release compared to the Cabernet Sauvignon and is medium-bodied, has a supple, soft mouthfeel, fi ne tannins, and a great finish.
